INVESTIGATION OF A CURRENT OF ATOMIC PARTICLES EMITTED BY A PLASMA

A new method of plasma diagnostics, based on investigations of the flux of neutral atomic particles emitted by a plasma, makes it possible to determine the magnitude of the flux of neutral particles having energies above 100 ev, investigate the energy distribution of the particles and their flux distribution over time, and analyze them according to mass. In measuring the flux parameters, the individual particles are registered after their conversion to ions by collision stripping in a gas and acceleration with a voltage of 10 to 20 kv. The method was used on the Alpha assembly to study a flux of neutral particles emitted by a plasma, with energies ranging from 100 ev to 10 kev. It was found that the flux consists for the most part of atomic hydrogen. The energy distribution of the atoms does not have a minimum in the energy range above 100 ev; thus it is not a Maxwellian distribution. The data show that the presence of this flux in the Alpha assembly is one of the main causes of energy losses from a plasma. A number of thoughts regarding the mechanism of neutralization of ions in a plasma are put forward on the basis of experimental data; the relation between the energy distribution of the atoms emitted by a plasma and that of ions in the plasma is also examined.
