METHOD OF MAKING A NEUTRON-ABSORBING CALCIUM BORIDE BRICK

Patent ·
OSTI ID:4695413
A method and a special mold are described for making a relatively inexpensive, durable shielding brick of CaB/sub 6/. The method comprises mixing 100 parts of CaB/sub 6/ powder with 5 to 10 parts water to form a thick dry mud, pressing the mud in the mold with a pressure of 1 to 2 tons/in./sup 2/ to form a brick, and baking the brick. In the baking step, the heat should be brought up slowly over 2 hr to a baking temperature of 600 to 900 c- C (750 c- C preferred), the temperature maintained for 2 to 6 hr, and the cooling carried out at the slowest rate possible.
