Progress is reported in a study of the effects of ionizing radiation on the reproductive process and survival of forest trees. Data are presented from studies on tue effect of low level chronic gamma irradiation on a pitch pine- oak forest. It was shown that the initiation of reproductive primordia in Pinus rigida, Quercus ilicifolia, Quercus alba, and Quercus coccinea is not unusually sensitive to irradiation. Spring flushing and growth were retarded in irradiated seedlings of Pinus rigda. Preliminary data are included from a study of the effects of chronic gamma radiation at doses ranging from normal background to 840 r/day delivered during a 18 to 20 hr exposure on a terrestrial ecosystem and its components.
