HYDRAULIC STUDIES OF A PROPOSED 9-ROD SRE 3RD CORE FUEL ELEMENT

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4695296

Hydraulic tests were performed in a hydraulic loop on a mockup of a 9- rod fuel element which is proposed for the SRE 3rd Core. The fuel element consists of an annular ring of nlne fuel rods surrounding a central support tube bounded by a process tube. The exit section of the fuel element contains an orifice plate to provide gross flow controi and a variable orifice to provide vernier flow control Pressure drop-flow rate data for the fuel element assembly and calibration of the variable orifice were obtained over a Reynolds number range of 12,000-150,000. Principles of dimensional similitude were used to convert the water test data to the SRE coolant conditions. (auth)
