TRANSIENT RADIATION EFFECTS ON ELECTRONIC PARTS. Fourth Quarterly Progress Report, January 1, 1963 through March 31, 1963. Report No. 4
Work continued on the measurement of radiation effects on coaxial cable. Information is based on irradiating about 180 cm of RG 58 cable having a solid polyethylene dielectric. About 100 measurements were processed, producing details on the ratio of charge per incident dose. The apparatus required to test small passive electronic components in vacuum in gamma-neutron fields was built and tested. Improvements in vacuum conditions are required. Sixteen capacitors were tested under irradiation; results will be discussed in a later report. The conductivity induced in RG 58 cable as a result of gamma irradiation was found to vary approximately as the 0.55 power of the dose rate over a range of 0.36 to 7 x 10/sup 4/ rads/sec. For a given dose rate, the induced conductivity is constant for any voltage applied to the cable within the range of --300 to +300 volts. The gamma induced secondary emission is constant over a measured dose rate range of 0.37 to 10/sup 8/ rads/sec. Thus, gamma photoconductivity is important at low dose rates and secondary emission is important at high dose rates. The secondary emission signals resulting from fast and thermal neutron irradiation are opposite in polarity to those from gamma irradiations. The neutron induced conductivity is not as sensitive to dose rate as is the conductivity induced by gamma irradiation. Further tests on initial cable effects indicate that an initial dose of 1000 rads or 10/sup 12/ nvt results in an initial fixed charge on the cable ranging from +1 x 10/sup -9/ to -2 x 10/sup -9/ coulomb. This initial charge depends on type and rate of irradiation, and on applied voltage. After this charge is deposited, the remaining signal is proportional to dose. (auth)
