At the end of the third quarter, the work on the surrounding-rod mockup, which is being fabricated at SRL, was about 90% complete. The mockup is expected to be ready for testing about the first week of October 1983. Preliminaty shakedown tests were made with the annular housing tube in place of the surrounding-rod mockup. The tests indicated required changes to prevent failure of the sapphire spacer pins and to minimize bowing of the central rod. (auth)
