A method is given for operating a heterogeneous reactor at high temperatures without large temperature changes in the fuel elements. The method comprises supplying heat to the fuel elements from an exterior source, e.g., electrical means, whenever the reactor power is reduced below a predetermined level. In the fabrication of the fuel elements, the elements can be maintained above a predetermined temperature by heating until they are introduced into the reactor. (D.L.C.)
