An economical fuel element with good burnup characteristics is designed for fast reactors. The fuel element comprises a strong sheath enclosing unalloyed Pu or U fuel, amd between 10 to 30% of the interior of the sheath is left empty to serve as an expansion space for the fuel and fission products. The sheath should have an outer diameter of 0.1 to 0.4 in. and a thickness of at least 1/10 of the diameter so as to withstand an internal pressure of 10,000 psi at 600 un. Concent 85% C, and it may be made of Nimonic or Inconel for use in liquid sodium. Several embodiments of the fuel element are described. (D.L.C.)
