FUEL ELEMENT FOR NUCLEAR REACTORS
A fuel element of the encased ceramic type is designed which has a high thermal conductivity from the fuel through the casing and which is relatively simple to make. The fuel element includes a layer of vitreous material between and bonded to the ceramic fuel pellets and the casing. The requirements for a satisfactory vitreous material are outlined, and several glass compositions are given. The fuel element is made by placing a quantity of glass frit at the bottom of the casing, filling the tube with pellets, heating and pressing the assembly to cause the glass to melt and extrude upwardly between the pellets and the casing, and finally sealing the assembly with a small gas space at the top.
