A bare-tube crossflow heat exchanger and a finned-tube crossflow heat exchanger were designed, constructed, and tested. The exchangers have sodium as a tube side fluid and air as a shell side fluid and are constructed of Inconel. The bare-tube heat exchanger has three unmixed passes on the sodium side and one mixed pass on the air side. The finned-tube heat exchanger has one unmixed pass on the sodium side and one mixed pass on the air side. Both exchangers were designed to have a 10-kw heat exchanger rate at 1500 deg F, 660 lb/h on the sodium side and at 80 deg F inlet temperature, 206 lb/h on the air side. The tests were run from 1 to 4 kw at sodium temperatures up to 830 deg F and sodium flow rates up to 2500 lb/hr. The inlet air temperatures were about 80 deg F. The maximum air flow was 220 lb/hr. The maximum pressure drop on the air side of the bare-tube heat exchanger was found to be 0.15 in. of water. The pressure drop on the air side of the finned tube heat exchanger was negligible. The sodium side was tested for pressure drop with water, and principles of dimensional similitude were applied to the test procedure to predict pressure drop in the sodium system. The maximum predicted pressure drop in the sodium system was 10 psi in the bare- tube heat exchanger and 1 psi in the finned-tube heat exchanger. The heat transfer coefficients for the air side are presented in the form of a stanton number. (auth)
