Studies were made on the isotopic distribution of hydrogen formed in the four abstraction reactions involving H and D atoms and the two isotopic hydrocarbon molecules for comparison with radiation chemical data. The most stricking result was the observation of very large isotope effects in the mercury- photosensitized decompositions. The hydrogen distributions obtained in both samples were qualitatively similar and suggest that large isotope effects in quenching and abstraction exist in both cases. In the radiolysis of equimolar C/ sub 4/H/sub 10/C/sub 4/D/sub 10/ and CH/sub 4/-CD/sub 4/ mixtures, the hydrogen distributions were quite different from those obtained in the mercury- photosensitized decomposition of similar mixtures.
