INDIRECT DETERMINATION OF THORIUM WITH (ETHYLENEDINITRILO) TETRAACETIC ACID
An indirect (ethylenedinitrilo)tetraacetic acid (EDTA) titration procedure was developed for the determination of Th in the presence of impurities. A solution containing from 1 to 50 mg of Th is buffered at pH 3.0 plus or minus 0.2 with sodium acetate and titrated at room temperature with EDTA to a xylenol orange end point. The sample is heated to boiling and a buffered fluoride solution is added that demasks the EDTA from the Th-EDTA complex. The free EDTA in the boiling solution is titrated with a standard Cu solution to a 1-(2- pyridylazo)-2-naphthol (PAN) end point. The procedure has a standard deviation within plus or minus 0.18 and a mean error within plus or minus 0.1 mg at the recommended concentration range. Twenty-seven cations were investigated as interferences; only Pu and Zr interfered. (auth)
