ELECTROWINNING URANIUM FROM URANIUM OXIDE

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4693566

The electrolytic reduction of UO/sub 2/ to molten U in fluoride baths at approximately 1200 un. Concent 85% C was demonstrated. Electrolyte constituents were BaF/sub 2/, UF/sub 4/, and either MgF/sub 2/ or LiF. Preliminary laboratory- scale experiments were made in which the UO/sub 2/ was added continuously for 3 to 5 hr to the cell during electrolysis. Over 1000 g of metal of 99.8% purity was made in some tests. Major impurities were Al, Ba, Fe, Si, C, and O. The effects of cell design, geometry, and bath composition were investigated. Electrode arrangement was the most important factor in cell performance. (auth)
