ANALYSIS OF IRON AND LIME IN DRILL CORE SAMPLES OF LORRAINE IRON ORES, USING X-RAY FLUORESCENCE EXCITED BY MEANS OF RADIOACTIVE SOURCE (in French)

Journal Article · · Intern. J. Appl. Radiation Isotopes
The method used is based on nondispersive spectrometry of fluorescent x radiation excited in the specimens by the bremsstrahlung of a radioactive tritium source absorbed in titanium. The fluorescent x radiation is detected by a sealed proportional counter, which enables a spectrometry of this radiation to be carried out by pulse-height analysis. As the apparatus operates in air, only the characteristic radiation of iron and calcium can be detected. The pulse-height analyzer used includes two channels, allowing for simultaneous recording of the intensity of the iron and calcium radiations. The detector head is free to move along the length of the drill sample, thus allowing one to record the variations of the intensities of the iron and calcium radiations along the axis of the sample at a maximum speed of 3 m/hr. In addition, the measurement of the average intensity by impulse counting enables the concentrations of ion and calcium in a fragment of the sample to be evaluated, after calibration, with an absolute precision of about 3 per cent.
