ADSORPTION OF CESIUM BY HYDROUS FERRIC OXIDE AND LIMONITE. Progress Report No. 2, October 1, 1958 to May 15, 1959
An investigation was made on the adsorption of cesium on hydrous ferric oxide and limonite. The study of the adsorption of cesium on hydrous ferric oxide covered a range of solution pH from 6.0 to 12.0 and a range of equilibrium cesium solution concentrations from 1.0 x 10/sup -5/ to 1.0 x 10/sup -2/ meq/ml. The study of the adsorption of cesium on limonite covered a range of solution pH from 7.0 to 12.0 and a range of equilibrium cesium solution concentrations from 1.0 x 10/sup -5/ to 1.0 x 10/sup -2/ meq/ml. Investigations were made on cesium solutions containing no NaCl and 1N NaCl. Cesium solution concentrations were determined by the radioactive tracer technique using Cs/sup 137/ tracer. From the experimental data, values of cesium equilibrium solution concentrations and solid phase concentrations were calculated. Isotherms (25 deg C) for the adsorption of cesium on hydrous ferric oxide and limonite were obtained by plotting tue solid phase concentration versus the equilibrium solution concentration on log-log paper and drawing a smooth curve through the data points. The distribution coefficients for cesium between the solid and liquid phases were calculated from the isotherms. Then the distribution coefficients were plotted versus equilibrium solution concentrations. The distribution coefficient for the adsorption of cesium on hydrous ferric oxide varied from 10.2 (meq/gm)/(meq/ml) at an equilibrium solution concentration of 1.0 x x/sup -5/ (meq/ml) to 11.9 (meq/ gm)/(meq/ml) at an equilibrium solution concentration of 1.0 x 10/sup -2/ (meq/ ml). The distribution coefficient for the adsorption of cesium on hydrous ferric oxide from a lN NaCl solution varied from 5.60 (meq/gm)/(meq/ml) at an equilibrium solution concentration of 1.0 x 10/sup -2/ (meq/ml) to 6.10 (meq/gm)/ (meq/ml) at an equilibrium solution concentration of 1.0 x 10/sup -2/ (meq/ml). The distribution coefficient for the adsorption of cesium by limonite varied from 56.0 (meq/gm)/(meq/ml) at an equilibrium solution concentration of 1.0 x 10/sup - 5/ (meq/ml) to 2.10 (meq/gm)/(meq/ml) at an equilibrium solution concentration of 10 x 10/sup -2/ (meq/ml). The distribution coefficient for the adsorption of cesium by limonlte from a 1N NaCl solution varied from 5.70 (meq/gm)/(meq/ral) at an equilibrium solution concentration of 1.0 x 10/sup -5/ (meq/ml) to 1.36 (meq/ gm)/(meq/ml) at an equilibrium solution concentration of 1.0 x 10/sup -2/ (meq/ ml). The precision of the data is not sufficient to show a significant effect of pH on the adsorption of cesium although the data seem to indicate an effect. (auth)
