THE KINETICS OF THE GAMMA RADIOLYSIS OF CHLOROFORM. (thesis)

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4692819
BS>A review of advances in radiation chemistry is presented as a background to the study of the radiolysis of chloroform. Reagents, sample preparation, irradiation procedure, analyses for radiolysis products, and dosimetry are discussed. A total of 47 samples were irradiated and analyzed. Compounds formed in the radiolysis of chloroform include - methylene chloride, carbon tetrachloride, symmetrical tetrachloroethane, pentachloroethane, hexachloroethane. tetrachloroethylene, hexachloropropane, octachloropropane, other organic compNoneounds in trace NoneamountsNone~ HNoneCl, Cl/sub 2/, H/sup 2/ , and some products containing atoms foreign to chloroform. Radical scavengers (halogens) were used, and their products are also discussed Reaction mechanisms for producing the products observed were studied. (M.C.G.)
