The nonlinear interaction of an r-f electromagnetic wave and a plasma, which is characterized by the generation of electromagnetic power at frequencies harmonically related to the applied frequency, is studied theoretically and experimentally. The various plasma mechanisms that are responsible for this nonlinear behavior are identified and analyzed. One particular mechanism is analyzed in detail, and experiments which are designed to verify this detailed analysis are described. Good agreement between theory and experiment is obtained. Closely, related to the nonlinear study is the topic of propagation of electromagnetic waves in a plasma. It is found that ihere is a mode of propagation in a bounded magneto plasma, which can be classified as a surface wave. This mode exhibits a non-reciprocal behavior similar to the effect found in a ferrite field displacement isolator. The relationship of the propagation constant and the field configuration of this mode to the plasma parameters is studied. Theory and preliminary experimental results are in qualitative agreement.
