ON THE MECHANISM OF THE RADIATION-INDUCED POLYMERIZATION OF /cap alpha/- METHYLSTYRENE (in Japanese)

Though alpha -methylstyrene ( alpha MS) was hardly polymerizable by use of peroxide initiators, it could be polymerized with gamma rays at room temperature. The mechanism for this polymerization was studied by a copolymerization experiment. A mixture (1: 1) of alpha MS and MMA (methylmethacrylate) was irradiated with gamma rays at room temperature. The infrared spectrum of the polymer thus obtained contained the bonds of both carbonyl and phenyl groups, suggesting it to be a copolymer. Moreover, it was quite similar to the spectrum of the product radically copolymerized from the mixture of alpha MS and MMA with azo-bisisobutyinitrile. Since MMA is hardly polymerizable by a cationic catalyst, this result would support a radical mechanism of alpha MS polymerization. (T.F.H.)
