Th and Zr ions were shown to catalyze the dephosphorylation of phosphoric acid esters under mild, physiological conditions. Thus, at 37 un. Concent 85% over the pH range 2 to 10, these ions promote the release of inorganic phosphate from glucose-1-phosphate, glucose-6-phosphate, fructose- 6phosphate, fructose-1,6-diphosphate, and 3-phosphoglyceric acid. In the physiologic range (pH 6 to 8), Th ion was considerably more active than Zr ion. Of the substrates tested, glucose-1-phosphate was split most rapidly; in the presence of Th/sup 4+/ at pH 7, st run. Concent 36% was split within 24 hr. Under the same conditions, Zr/sup 4+/ split only 7.5%. Th ion also rapidly dephosphorylated fructose-1,6-diphosphate at pH 7, whereas Zr ion was only one- third as effective. The fact that the ions break down important substrates of carbohydrate metabolism should be considered as a possible explanation of their toxicity in biological systems. (TCO)
