Determination of Hydrogen in Sodium by Isotopic Dilution with Tritium

Isotopic dilution with tritium is an efficient method for determining hydrogen in sodium. Satisfactory recoveries were obtained using hydrogen spikes of 18 to 90 mu l, corresponding to 140 to 4000 ppm of hydrogen in sodium. The recovery is shown to be independent of concentration. Equilibrium between the added tritiated-hydrogen and the hydrogen in the sample was established by heating in a sealed borosilicate glass tube at 420 °C for 10 minutes. The activity of the tritiated hydrogen samples was determined by Geiger counting.
