Fundamental problems of different types of photomultiplier tubes for scintillation uses are described. The relation between the parameters of the photomultiplier tube and its application is discussed. The status of photocathodes, secondary emissive surfaces, and photomultipliers is discussed. The structure between the cathode and the first dynode, and the dynode structure, is reviewed. Improvements for the photomultiplier, photocathode, and dynode structures are described. (auth)
