IODINE VAPOR-SILVER NITRATE REACTION MECHANISMS AND PHASE EQUILIBRIA

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4691395

The reaction of I/sub 2/(v) with AgNO/sub 3/(s or l) produced AgI and AgIO/sub 3/ in different ratios depending on temperature and ambient gas composition. A reaction mechanism via the INO/sub 3/ intermediate is proposed. Silver iodate was proved stable in the presence of AgNO/sub 3/ and AgI up to at least 320 un. Concent 85% C. A temperature -composition diagram was prepared for the ternary AgI-AgIO/sub 3/ -AgNO/sub 3/ with the lowest melting point eutectic at 76 un. Concent 85% C and a corresponding composition of 50% AgI-23% AgIO/sub 3/ -27% AgNO/sub 3/. (auth)
