ABS>A theory on glass-metal bonding is developed and discussed. The theory states that chemical bonding occurs at the glass-metal interface'' whem there is a balance of bond emergies, which is achieved when thermodynamic equilibrium exists. This interface'' consists of a transi-tion zone that includes an intermediate -ous oxide layer,'' which can be monomolecular in thickness. This layer must be in thermodynamic equilibrium with the glass at the interface and also with the metal at the interface. The development of these conditioms is discussed for the examples of iron, gold, and platinum in contact with sodium disilicate. The significance of sessile-drop experiments and strength measurements of glass-metal seals are also discussed. The steps takem im making glass-metal seals are briefly covered. (auth)
