DEVELOPMENT OF PLUTONIUM-BEARING FUEL MATERIALS. Monthly Progress Letter, January 1963

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4690693
A set of irradiation specimens and the combination coolant flow directors-capsule holders are ready for shipment to the GETR. Outfitting of the alpha boxes for the hot cell and hot metallography cell is continuing. An alpha box which will house equipment for chemical separations and fuel burnup analysis was designed for the Junior Cave. Fuel pellets were fabricated so that corrosion studies under various water chemistry conditions can be initiated. Duplex pellets consisting of UO/sub 2/-- PO/sub 2/ and various inert materials were sintered to ascertain the degree of reaction between constituents. The PuO/sub 2/ preparation studies were extended to include the peroxide route. Preliminary results indicate that the product PuO/sub 2/ powder has characteristics similar to powder produced by the oxalate route, however, sinterability trials were not made. (N.W.R.)
