Effetti delle Radiazioni Ionizzanti su Cellule Meristematiche Apicali di Avena Sterilis (2 n = 42) (in Italian)

Journal Article · · Caryologia
Chromosomal anomalies observed after x irradiation of the germinating seeds with 100, 250, and 500 r were compared with those previously observed in other Avena species with lower chromosome numbers (A. strigosa, 2n = 14 and A. barbata, 2n = 28). Agglutination of chromosomes was frequently observed, with consequent prolongation of the duration of metaphase and compression of the proximal portion (centromeric region) of the chromosomes. Acentric fragmentation of chromosomes and formation of ring or cyclic chromosomes were also noted. Disorders in the formation of the spindle were evident in anaphase as well as in metaphase, which were accompanied by errors in spiralization and spurious breakage. Development of micronuclei by a group of chromosomes undergoing retarded division was also seen. In contrast to results of earlier studies with Avena species having fewer chromosomes, it was difficult to observe inversions, translocations, and deletions of single chromosomes. (H.H.D.)
