THE $gamma$-RADIATION FIELD OF A WELL-COLLIMATED BEAM FROM A POINT SOURCE OF Cs$sup 137$ OR Co$sup 60$ IN IRON (in Russian)
A 1.0 curie source of Cs/sup 137/, and a 0.55 curie source of Co/sup 60/ were placed in a 16 x 18 x 25 cm block of iron plates. The well-collimated gamma beam was led out through an opening in the front wall of the assembly 0.7 cm in diameter and 8 cm long, and gamma measurements were taken with a small halogen counter at various distances h along the beam from the exit point, and at various radial distances r in a plane normal to the beam. The gamma readings for the Cs/sup 137/ source were taken at five fixed distances of 1.19, 2.56, 3.92, 5.28, and 6.65 free path lengths, and for the Co/sup 60/ source at 1, 4, and 5 free path lengths. The scattered gamma reading in counts per minute was plotted as a function of the radial distance r for various values of h. The build- up factors for the scattered radiation were determined for various distances of h. The calculated build-up factors were in good agreement with the data of Goldstein and Wilkins (NYO-3075). Analogous experiments were also carried out for concrete, aluminum, and lead. (TTT)
