THE CLASSICAL CALCULATION OF THE PROBABILITIES OF EXCITATION AND IONIZATION OF ATOMS BY ELECTRON IMPACT

Journal Article · · Opt. Spectry. (USSR)(English Transl.)
OSTI ID:4688643
The problem of the excitation or ionization of an atom or molecule is explained on the basis of classical mechanics in the two-body approximation. Expressions are derived for the ionization cross section and the total excitation cross section for all levels lying in a given energy interval. In all cases, the calculated values agree with the experimental data in order of magnitude. They also agree with Darwin's empirical formula for ionization; therefore, this formula is recommended, with slight modifications, for calculating the excitation cross section also. (auth)
