RADIOCHEMICAL STUDIES OF SPONTANEOUS FISSION OF U$sup 23$$sup 8$

The mass distribution of spontaneous fission products from U/sup 238/ is investigated. The fission yield of several fission products (Sr/sup 89/, Sr// sup 90/, Zr/sup 97/, Cs/sup 138/, and Ba/sup 1 39/) was determined by radiochemical separation. Very selective radiochemical separation methods were developed for this purpose. The following cumulative fission yields were measured: Sr/sup 89/: 3.9; Sr/sup 90/:6.0; Zr/sup 97/;5.8; Cs/sup 138/: 7.7; Cs/ sup 139/: 6.9; and Ba/sup 139/: 6.8. The independent fission yields for spontaneous U/sup 238/ fission are calculated. The results indicate that the neutron evaporation model is also valid for heavy fission products. (Gmelin Inst.)
