A method for the fabrication of porous refractory bodies is presented that comprises the steps of mixing finely divided particles of a refractory material, a carbonaceous binder, and a pore-forming material. The mixture is formed into the desired shape and heated to cure the binder to form a resin matrix or to carbonize the binder to form a carbon matrix within the refractory body. (C.E.S.)
