Attempts were made to obtain glasses with high pulse heights and stability in devitrification. Samples of LiMg- Si glasses containing Ce/sup */O/ sub 2/ were meited under reducing conditions in the gas furnace between 1400 and 1500 deg C. The pulse heights were measured by the conventional method using Cs/ sup 137/ for gamma and Sr/sup 90/ for BETA sources. The decay times and absorptions were also determined. The results indicated that the pulse heights of the giasses can be increased by the addition of CeO/sub 2/ only up to 1.6 wt% because the Ce/sup 3+/ ions act as a phosphor of the scintillation glasses during reduction. The addition of As/sub 2/O/sub 3/ is also effective. Pulse heights are decreased in the presence of impurities such as Fe ions; hence, better results are obtained when glasses are melted in a quartz crucible. The (approximate) composition of a glass recommended is 80% SiO/sub 2/, 9% Li/sub 2/ O, 7% MgO, 4% Al/sub 2/O/sub 3/, 4% K/sub 2/O or Na/ sub 2/O, 1.6% CeO/sub 2/, and 0.5% As/sub 2/O/sub 3/ by weight.
