NEUTRON IRRADIATION EFFECTS IN SLURRIES OF ThO$sub 2$ AND UO$sub 2$ IN INHIBITED BISMUTH

Journal Article · · J. Nucl. Energy, Pts. A & B
Slurries of 10 wt% ThO/sub 2/ and UO/sub 2/ in bismuth inhibited with 0.1 wt% Mg and 0.05 wt% Zr, canned in 2 1/2 Cr-1% Mo steel, were studied by microexamination after holding at 500 deg C and after irradiating to 7 x 10/sup 20/ thermal neutrons per cm/sup 2/. Uranium was reduced by the inhibitors, in- pile and out-of-pile, to form UBi/sub 2/ and a uranium-bismuth-zirconium alloy, in the UO/sub 2/ slurry. Uranium-233 bred in the ThO/sub 2/ slurry was reduced and concentrated by mass transfer processes, while the ThO/sub 2/ was unattacked. Steel corrosion inhibition broke down im the in-pile ThO/sub 2/ slurry can. (auth)
