Three dogs, having a strongly uncompensated type of higher nervous activity (Pegas), a very inert type (Zhuk) and a weak type of nervous activity (Pushok), were given a total dose of 500 r of Co/sup 60/ radiation over a period of four months. The daily dose of 4.5 to 5.5 r was administered six times per week. No external symptoms of radiation sickness were observed during the irradiation period, although a slight leucocytosis was observed in Pegas, and a decrease in the relative content of lymphocytes from 25 to 16% was observed in Pushok. The amount of conditioned salivary flow, the absence of a motor alimentary reflex and other disturbances were used as indices of the effect of chronic radiation on the higher nervous activity of the animal. All the animals showed disturbances in the higher nervous activity. Pegas and Pushok showed maximum shifts during the second and third months of the irradiation, and Zhuk on the second month of irradiation. The disturbances in Pushok and Pegas persisted for about three months after the irradiation, but the higher nervous activity of Zhuk (highly stable type of nervous activity) returned to normal during the 3rd and 4th month of irradiation. No correlation between the disturbance in higher nervous activity and radiation dose could be obtained because of the activation of compensatory processes during the irradation. (TTT)
