About half of the Tm K alpha x rays emitted following the electron- capture decay of Yb/sup 169/ are emitted with the Tm/sup 169/ nuclei in either the 473 or 379-kev excited isomeric states. Since the nuclear charge distribution of the Tm/sup 169/ nuclei in these two excited isomeric states is expected to be different from the nuclear charge distribution of the Tm/sup 169/ nuclei in the ground state, a slight isomeric shift of the K alpha x rays is expected. A search for this isomeric shift of the Tm K alpha /sub 1/ x ray was carried out by means of a 2meter curved-crystal spectrometer. No isomeric shift within the resolving power of the spectrometer could be observed. The result for the measured shift of the energy of the Tm K alpha /sub 1/ x ray emitted from an TYb/sup 169/ source compared with the energy of the K alpha /sub 1/ x ray emitted from a Tm x ray source with all Tm/sup 169/ in the ground state was 0.07 plus or minus 0.7 ev. Thus an upper limit of 0.8 ev for the observed shift in energy of the Tm K alpha /sub 1/ x ray emitted by an Yb/sup 169/ source compared with the energy of the Tm K alpha /sub 1/ x ray emitted by a natural Tm x-ray source can be set. Since somewhat less than one half of the K alpha /sub 1/ x rays emitted from the Yb/sup 169/ source are emitted with the Tm/sup 169/ nuclei in the 473 or 379-kev excited isomeric states, an experimental upper limit of 1.8 ev for the actual isomeric shift of the Tm K alpha /sub 1/ x ray can be set from this measureinent. In addition, the wavelength of the Tm K alpha /sub 1/ x ray emitted from an Yb/sup 169/ source was measured to be 243.829 plus or minus 0.006 XU, which is in good agreement with the previous measurement by Bergvall.
