COOLING MEDIUM CIRCULATION SYSTEMS FOR NUCLEAR REACTORS

Patent ·
OSTI ID:4686739
A method for preventing leaks in the coolant-circulating system of a double-walled reactor is patented. The coolant is circulated by an impeller mounted in a housing forming an extension of the inner wall and driven by a motor mounted in a stationary position outside the walls of the reactor. The shaft passing through the reactor walls must have gas-tight seals, which are difficult to obtain because the inner and outer walls of the reactor are displaced relative to each other by thermal expansion and contraction. To compensate for the displacement, the shafts between the impeller and the motor are provided with a combination of universal joints and splines. (M.P.G.)
