The most promising materials are hard and refractory metal-like compounds of rare and rare-earth metals (Ti, Zr, Hf, V, Nb, Ta, Mo, W, La, Ce, Y) with B and C, Si, N, S (borides, carbides, silicides, nitrides, sulfides). The materials offer high hardness, wear resistance, strength and refractoriness, and a series of specific physical properties. The basic physical and mechanical properties of the technically most important refractory compounds are given. A detailed description is given of the fields where the materials are to be used according to their basic properties (ultra-heat-resistant materials, chemically stable alloys, heat and scale resistant alloys, hard, and electric-and-radio- engineering materials). (Referativnyy zhurnal, Metallurgiya, No. 8, 1962) give results consistent with the explanation proposed for agglomerate behavior on post- irradiation heating. (auth)
