The energy of bodies (control rods or fuel elements, for instance) falling within a nuclear reactor can be absorbed by mounting a deformable tube with a flared end on the body so that a stationary nondeforming tube with an enlarged head enters and deforms the falling tube. Mounting the movable tube by shears pins gives additional protection for large impacts. (D.C.W.)
