K/(L + M) CONVERSION RATIOS IN THE DECAY Pm$sup 148$ $Yields$ Sm$sup 14$$sup 8$

Journal Article · · Nucl Phys.
The K/(L + M) conversion ratios of the 286, 550, and 827 kev transitions among the excited states of Sm/sup 148/ populated by the decay of Pm/sup 148/ were measured using a shallow diffused silicon p-n junction detector. The reliability of the p-n junction detector as an instrument for the quantitative measurement of K/(L + M) conversion ratios was established by measuring the K/(L + M) conversion ratios of Hg/sup 203/, AU/sup 198/, Cs/sup 137/ and Bi/sup 207/ comparing the values obtained with those of previous workers using other methods. For the measurements of the K/(L + M) conversion ratios of the transitions in Sm/ sup 148/, the p-n junction detector was employed in an arrangement that afforded the use of beta-gamma coincidence techniques. The following values were obtained: (K/(L plus or minus M))/sub 286/ = 7.0 plus or minus 1.0; (K/(L plus or minus M))/sub 550/ = 5.1 plus or minus 0.3; (K/(L + M))/sub 627/ =5.4 plus or minus 0.4. The K/(L + M) ratio measured for the 286 kev transition, considered with the results of others, permits an M1 + E2 multipolarity assignment to this transition and indicates a 6/sup +/ yields 6/sup +/ transi- tion between the 2.19 and 1.90 Mev states in Sm/sup 148/.
