In a study of possible origins of life, mixtures of adenine-8-C¹⁴ and ribose were irradiated in the air-free state by ultraviolet germicidal lamps for 1 hr( approximates 10⁸ ergs absorbed) and then chromatographed and autoradiographed for evidence of adenosine formation. No adenosine was detected for adenine and ribose alone, but when phosphoric acid or ethyl metaphosphate was added, adenosine was formed in a yield of approximates 0.01% (quantum yield approximates 10⁻⁵). The yield was not affected by hydrogen or air in the atmosphere above the solution, or the pH. (D.L.C.)
