Mesic hyperfragments produced in the interactions of π- mesons at 17.2 GeV/c with the nuclei of ionographic emulsions (in French)

Journal Article · · Physics Letters

Thirty-five of the 168 hyperfragments produced in Ilford G5 emulsion exposed to 17.2-Bev/c mesons ( pi -) exhibited mesic decay. The different decay modes and their binding energies were calculated. The distributions of the hyperfragments as functions of track length, charge, and number of branches were similar to those obtained in interactions of 25-Bev protons and of 1.5-Bev/c K -. Maxima in the list two distributions occurred for Z = 2 and 3, are spectively. Several of the hyperfragments had charge Z > Z, and the existence of the He6 hyperfragment was apparently confirmed. The event /sub LAMBDA /B12 yields C12 + pi - gave C12 in the ground state. a study of the angular distribution of the hyperfragments ruled out an evaporation mechanism for their production.
