The design requirements, the findamental design problems, and the test facility for the Tory II-A reactor are described. Tory II-A was an engineering test reactor, built and tested to gain information on the materials, engineering, and physics problems. The available air allowed fullpower full-temperature operation of the reactor for a period of less thand two minutes. The reactor was first operated at 50 Mw in May 1961. In late September and early October of 1961 the reactor was tsken to high power three times in succession. These runs were followed by remote disassembly of the reactor. (M.C.G.)
