MAGNETOHYDRODYNAMIC STABILITY OF A TOROIDAL PLASMA STRUCTURE
The macroscopic behavior of an infinitely long toroidal plasma structure of the type used in anm ideal plasma switch is investigated. The plasma trajectory of an infinitesimally thin plasma with the geometric form of a right circular cylinder is described, and the stability of certain general geometric configurations is examined. It is shown that a plasma of infinitesinal thickness with the form of a right circular cylinder of arbitrary cross section always has a position of stable configuration and that the plasma cylinder will remain stable if it maintains a constandt rotational velocity about the longitudinal axis. When the plasma has finite thickness, it has a stable configuration position in which its cross section must be circular. (D.C.W.)
