IRRADIATION OF MIXTURE OF PERCHLORO-ETHYLENE AND ALCOHOLS (in Japanese)

Journal Article · · Proc. Japan Conf. Radioisotopes
OSTI ID:4684341
The reaction between perchloroethylene and alcohols is not producible by the methods of photochemistry or by the use of peroxide radical-forming reagents, but it is readily produced by gamma irradiation. The main reaction is the 1 : 1 addition reaction. Various chloric alcohols of the 1 :1 addition products are separable. A mixture of 1:4 mole ratio of perchlorcethylene and alcohols is sealed in an ampule, and irradiated at dose rates of 0.16 x 10/sup 5/ to 3 x 10/ sup 5/ r/hr with gamma rays. The unreacted perchloroethylene and alcohol are distilled after irradiation and the residue is distilled in vacuum, by which means a transparent, viscous residual oil having a moldy odor is obtained. The yields using various alcohols, and the reaction rates of perchloroethylene, are tabulated. (T.F.H.)
