The Regge method is extended to the nonrelativistic three-body problem. The usual many-channel procedure is extended to treat the case of a particle impinging upon a bound state of two others, fully taking into account the possibility of three free particles emerging. The total angular momentum quantum number j along with one of the orbital momenta 1/sub 1/, is continued into the complex plane, the other orbital momentum 1/sub 2/ and the difference j-1//sub 1/ being kept integral. Three kinds of branch points of the square root type are found. The first are kinematic, fixed at the integers; they prevent the S-matrix from being unitary, except at integral values of j, but cancel in the amplitudes. The second are also generally fixed at the integars. The third are energy dependent. Each two-particle Regge poletrajectory manifests itself in the three- particle S-matrix as an infinite number of branch-point trajectories. The argument that leads to them is easily generalized to the case of n particles. (auth)
