LIQUID SCINTILLATION COUNTER (in Japanese)

Journal Article · · Proc. Japan Conf. Radioisotopes
OSTI ID:4682547

S>A home-made liquid scintillation counter is used to naeasure low- energy BETA rays emitted from C/sup 14/, H/sup 3/, and other isotopes with a small volume liquid scintillator. The scintlilator used is FPO 4 g/l and POPOP 0.1 g/l in 20 cc of toluene. Two photomultipliers are used to compose a coincidence system. The detector unit is set in a freezer, and detector temperature is controiled around 0-10 deg C to reduce thermal noises. The counting efficiency for C/sup 14/ is 86% or better and the background counting rate is about 30 cpm, and for H/sup 3/, 15% or better and about 50 cpm. With appropriate setting of the conditions of three amplifiers and a two-channel pulse height analyzer, the double tracers such as H/sup 3/ and C/sup 14/ can be measured at the same time. The efficiency must be calibrated for each sample measured. Several methods of calibration are discussed. (A.G.W.)
