Single-Crystal Elastic Constants of BeO from Polycrystalline Measurements

Young's modulus for single BeO crystals can be deduced from measurements and orientation distribution fanctions of several polycrystalline BeO specimens having different degrees of preferred grain orientation. An equation for the modulus in terms of the angle with the c axis was derived and is plotted; the curve has the same general shape as that of CdS, which is in the same space group as BeO. The modulus in the direction of the c axis is 66.2 x 106 psi.
