An attempt was made to establish a scheme for the radiolysis of methane that takes into consideration both excitation and primary ionization. Sufficient physical data were available to establish a satisfactory balance for the primary reactions, but the secondary reactions are still too poorly known for a complete scheme to be determined. However, it was shown that the numerical G values are of the order of magnitude predicted by such a scheme if it is assumed that the reaction H + CH/sub 4/ yields CH/sub 3/ + H/sub 2/ does not occur. The heavy liquid product observed in the radiolysis can be due to reactions for the insertion of the CH/sub 2/ radical or to reactions of the C/sub 3/H/sub 5/ radical. (tr-auth)
