It was previously found that most radioactive antimony (Sb/sup 124/(III) or Sb/sup 125/(III) in HCl solution) is convented to Sb(V)/sup by its own radiations. Some studies were made to clear the reaction mechanism and to find conditions that may retard the self-oxidation reaction. Hydrochloric acid solutions of Sb/sup 124/(III) were prepared, and these sample solutions were kept under several different conditions. The Sb/sup 124/(V) produced was separated and counted. For the separation of Sb/sup 124/(V) from Sb/sup 124/(III), the modified isopropylether extraction method proposed by N. A. Bonner was employed and gamma rays were counted with a scintillator. The relations of Sb/sup 124/ (V) produced and the time elapsed were investigated closely. By plotting the logarithm of Sb/sup 124/(III) (% unconverted) versus the time elapsed all the reactions were found to be of first-order, and the half time for the conversion was obtained. The factors that influence the reaction velocity were found to be light, temperature, and specific activity and acidity of the sample. For retarding the selfoxidation reaction, the sample should be kept in a dark place at a temperature lower than 4 deg C. The specific activity of the sample should be lowered if allowable and the acidity should be lower than 6 M HCl. (A.G.W.)
