Density change and F-centre formation in X-rayed sodium chloride crystals

Journal Article · · Phys. Letters
The density change of NaCl crystals brought about by uniform coloration with x rays was measured using a hydrostatic flotation method. The irradiation was performed with 140-kev, 10-ma x rays at 23 deg C. The density change was found to grow in almost the same manner as the F-center concentration in terms of increasing irradiation time. A linear extrapolation of the experimental curve down to irradiation time t = 0 yields a positive density change. This indicates a contribution to the volume expansion arising from those F-centers formed by the rapid process. It seems possible that the rapid coloration also involves the formation of new vacancies.
