The effect of zinc oxide in Raney copper catalysts on methanol synthesis, water gas shift, and methanol steam reforming reaction

Raney copper catalysts prepared by leaching have been doped with precipitated zinc oxide using a novel preparation technique. The resulting catalysts maintained approximately the same surface area with varying coverage of the copper surface by zinc oxide. The activity of the catalysts has been tested for methanol synthesis, the forward and reverse water gas shift and for methanol steam reforming. Methanol synthesis increases with zinc oxide content, while the forward and reverse water gas shift and the steam reforming reaction decrease with increasing zinc oxide content. The results can be explained in terms of a model in which synergy between copper and zinc oxide relates to formation of H atoms on copper followed by migration to zinc oxide.
