It was confirmed that pore size of the acidic Cs salts was controlled by the Cs content. For example, CS{sub 2.5}H{sub 0.5}PW{sub 12}O{sub 40} had mesopores and micropores larger than 8.5 {Angstrom} in diameter, and Cs{sub 2.2}H{sub 0.8}PW{sub 12}O{sub 40} micropores of about 7 {Angstrom}. Shape selective catalysis was clearly observed for the latter catalyst. The acidic Cs salts as well as H{sub 3}PW{sub 12}O{sub 40} possess very strong acidity and were more catalytically active than zeolites and SO{sub 4}{sup 2-}/ZrO{sub 2} for decomposition of esters and alkylation in liquid-solid reaction system.
